Blue Monday: Small Habits That Can Support Your Mental Health
18 January, 2026
January can feel like a difficult month. The days are short, the weather is often cold and grey, and it can be hard to find motivation. It’s normal to feel a bit low during this time, but small, manageable habits can help improve your mood and overall wellbeing, without putting pressure on yourself to “fix” everything at once.
1. Gentle Morning Rituals
Starting your day with something small and intentional can make a real difference. This could be stretching for a few minutes, having a warm drink while sitting quietly, or simply taking a few deep breaths before beginning your day. Pairing a tiny positive action with something you already do can help it feel achievable rather than overwhelming.
2. Move Your Body in Ways That Feel Good
Exercise doesn’t need to be intense or long. Even a short walk outside, some gentle stretching, or light movement at home can boost mood and energy. The key is to choose something that feels enjoyable, rather than something you feel you “should” do.
3. Connect, Even Briefly
Social contact, even in small amounts, can help protect mental health. Sending a message to a friend, having a brief phone call, or sharing a coffee with a colleague can help you feel less isolated. If meeting in person isn’t possible, online or voice contact still counts.
4. Mind Your Sleep and Rest
Quality sleep is essential for mental health. Try to maintain regular sleep patterns and create a bedtime routine that helps your mind and body unwind. Small changes, such as reducing screen time before bed or keeping your bedroom calm and comfortable, can make a noticeable difference.
5. Notice the Small Wins
When motivation is low, it’s easy to overlook progress. Take time to acknowledge even the smallest achievements, like getting out of bed on a difficult morning, completing a task, or practising self-care. Celebrating small wins can gently build confidence and a sense of control.
A Gentle Reminder
If low mood, anxiety, or lack of motivation persists, you don’t have to manage it alone. Talking to someone you trust, or seeking support from a GP or mental health professional, is a sign of strength. Even small steps can be meaningful, and reaching out can be a powerful way to care for yourself.
At Wylie Health, we offer a 60-minute mental health appointment designed to give you the time and space to talk through what’s on your mind. During this session, our experienced clinicians provide a supportive, non-judgmental environment where you can explore your mood, stress, or anxiety, and work together to develop practical strategies to improve your wellbeing. Whether it’s the first step towards understanding your mental health or a check-in to support ongoing challenges, this appointment allows us to focus entirely on you and your needs.
Remember, supporting your mental health isn’t about making huge changes overnight, it’s about taking small, manageable steps that feel right for you. Some days will be easier than others, and that’s completely normal. Be kind to yourself, notice the small moments of progress, and give yourself permission to take things one day at a time. Even tiny habits can gradually make a meaningful difference to how you feel.
